We love CCH! We always go there first just for the reasons you list, sometimes they have just the thing! They are also great at repairing storm windows. They have redone almost all of ours as they have aged and the edges of them started coming off of the glass.

I remember once my dad who lives in Colorado had been scouring the country (literally, every time he traveled somewhere he would look) for a certain coffee pot cleaner he could no longer find. When he visited me he found it there! He is a convert now, whenever he can't find something he calls me and has me go check Chevy Chase Hardware.

Merry Christmas, Rona!
I had asked for the Heritage Cook Book for Christmas after reading about it on your site, and I'm happy to report that it's a great read. Looking forward to making many of the recipes. Thank you.

Aahh...Hickory Nut Pie. A few people didn't believe me that this wonderful pie even existed...our tiny slices that we shared (and hid from a cute lil girl) and enjoyed SO MUCH were enough to last me until next year...I hope. Thank you for letting us share in that experience!

On Doughnuts: The traditional food that is fried in oil during the celebration of Chanukah is the potato latke. In Israel, the tradition is to fry doughnuts (sufganyot). Since enjoying cider doughnuts this summer at the Cider Mill Farm and tasting more cider doughnuts at the Ithaca Apple Festival (which were heavy on the grease), I decided to create a recipe for cider doughnuts. Initially I was going to use apple cider but have since decided to use apple juice concentrate. I will let you know how they come out.

RE: Asking for cinnamon to be sent to you while you were posted in the Philippines:

I visited a friend you just returned from a 2-week volunteer program teaching on a small Chinese island, 1 hour south of Hong Kong. On a kitchen shelf I saw a red ribbon-wrapped bunded of 14 inch long sticks. They were cinnamon sticks that were given to my friend as a gift. They looked lovely. Also, more impressive than the 3-inch length cinnamon sticks that we purchase in spice bottles.
