Chew the Right Thing

Eat the View's Presidential PortraitsA lot is at stake today, Election Day 2008 — and I don’t mean tomato stakes. At Savoring Kentucky, we’re focused on the potential for our new leader to cultivate and accelerate the vital grassroots initiatives around this country and our world that aim to feed every person good food and improve the soil, water, and air while doing it.

Roger Doiron, aka “Roger the Gardener,” founding director of Kitchen Gardeners International, leads on one big part of this issue. For months he has consistently encouraged all of us, including our next president, to grow what we eat, right in our yards. The White House grounds, Roger notes, are our lawn, too.

That’s Roger’s photo, as far as I can tell, from eattheview.org. Roger’s cogent letter to the senators-who-would-be-president asserts that the governors of Maine, New York and North Carolina are already growing gardens at their respective Governor’s Lawns.
