This week’s ice storm caused more than 600,000 Kentuckians to lose electrical power. Many will have neither power nor water for many days. Trees are broken, cars are smashed, schools are closed, and businesses are suffering.
The world outside can seem dazzling one moment and sinister the next. Looking at all the chaos made me think about the ways we humans bring order and sweet repetition to our food and drink as we grow it and prepare it for eating. Here are examples from my Kentucky photo files:

Got both photo sets here in England (where much of the country has been shut down by 4 inches of snow)….one devastatingly beautiful, the other beautifully devastating. Stay warm. jw
